Server Solutions

The first step toward selecting just the right file server for your firm is to step backwards. Go back to the choice you made for a Network Operating System. This is critical. Each network operating system is different and the hardware requirements for each can vary by thousands of dollars.

You may not even need a dedicated file server to begin your Local Area Network. If you need only a few workstations and one or two printers and you don’t have vertical software with special requirements you may be able to start out your LAN with a Microsoft Windows 98 Network and grow into a larger, more sophisticated network as your firm grows.

The two most popular Local Area Network Operating Systems for PC-Based networks are Microsoft NT and Novell. The investment in either is about the same per user.

Microsoft NT is a great operating system if your needs require that type system. Microsoft NT has many bells and whistles and requires very powerful file servers to drive the very complex software. If it’s file and print services you want, Microsoft NT as a primary network operating system may not be your best choice. You will invest more money, installation time, and support time in a Microsoft NT network.

If you have no reason to have to choose Microsoft NT, then Novell will most likely be your best choice. Novell is the standard for network file and print services and network security services are the absolute best in the business. Novell can support many more workstations and support them faster with less powerful file servers than Microsoft NT.

After you’ve made a choice of network operating systems, it’s time to select just the right file server. There are many criteria to be considered when you decide to join your firm with what will become the single most important piece of equipment in your building. We suggest you consider the criteria with the seriousness normally reserved for commitments like "Holy Matrimony", because mistakes can not only be costly but may also cause you to suffer miserably. I’ve listed the criteria in order of their importance:

·         Will it do the job that needs to be done?

·         Does it have a large local installation base?

·         Can it be repaired quickly?

·         Does the dealer offer 7x24 service and support?

·         Does it have a reputable manufacturer’s warranty that includes on-site same or next day repair?

·         Will the installation be performed by a manufacturer’s authorized dealer?

·         Can more than one local person or computer dealer repair it?

·         Is it widely supported?

·         Can it be upgraded?

·         How much does it cost?
